007: THE BERKOV RESIDENCE

4 E 75th Street: The Berkov Residence is a design program for the residency of newly appointed consul and UN representative of Bulgaria. Within this home is an exploration in the cultural roots of the oldest Balkan nation of the EU and the intersectionality between modern family life.

For the past 3500 years, hand weaving and embroidery have adorned Bulgarian garments, textiles, carpets and tapestries. The intricate geometric motifs woven in are not only a decorative element, but a narrative of national identity. The position of triangles and other basic shapes, and how they merge together, can tell different messages and represent ideals such as nation, family and kinship. Similarly, geometries and symbolism in this home should not only create a narrative of Bulgarian identity, but tell a story of the Berkov family.

The idea of home is valued among Bulgarians as a place of celebration; place filled with music, friends and family to toast to, where dinner conversation spills over into the night. The Berkov Residence will be designed with these traditional Bulgarian ideals in mind while an atmosphere reminiscent of these lands will be established through cultural references.
